Project overview
This project was a challenging endeavor, characterized by its limited budget and stringent deadlines.
Inspired by other competitors business model, the client intends to allow users to independently upload their films. Given the startup's limitations in advanced technology and AI capabilities, the development of a manual content management system becomes imperative to create a user-friendly front-end streaming application akin to other streaming services.
Exploring opportunities
On this project, my initial focus was on immersing myself in the business landscape. I observed that most of streaming competitors generally follow a similar service concept. The primary yardsticks for service quality lie in the rapid introduction of new content and the possession of exclusive material—areas where streaming companies excels. Currently, our platform lacks the same level of resources.
Key Strategic Objectives
Considering our business strategy for the first year, our primary goal is to identify and retain users who can contribute content to our platform.
Crafting Relevant Questions
In line with these objectives, we framed several "How might we" (HMW) questions:
How might we make our platform enticing to users even without access to the latest content?
How can we encourage users to create the most captivating content?
What strategies can we employ to assemble a community of exceptionally creative users capable of generating engaging content?
Working process
To comprehend our users' needs, I employed the Jobs To Be Done (JTBD) framework, enabling the development of detailed user profiles. This foundational understanding allowed for the creation of Customer Journey Maps (CJMs), and ultimately, Product Prototypes utilizing the ANT Design system, all within the constraints of a tight timeline.
Jobs to be done
In our initial year, the pivotal user group we're targeting is the "authors." It's imperative that they have a compelling motivation to contribute content, including crafting engaging text descriptions, and more. To effectively engage this group, our platform needs to convey the right message. To gain deeper insights into our users, I developed a User Profile and outlined the Jobs To Be Done (JTBD) framework.
Sample User Desires
When I add new content to the platform, I aspire to receive appreciation and admiration from individuals who share my interests. This way, I can boost my self-esteem and sense of talent.
When I upload fresh content, I desire an avenue to discuss it with like-minded individuals. This allows me to share my creations with the community and alleviate feelings of isolation.
Hypothetical User Profile for “Authors”
Age Range: 16-38
Computer Proficiency: Intermediate to High
Skills: Proficient in crafting compelling texts about films
Expectations: Engage in film discussions, express personal viewpoints, gain recognition for writing prowess, foster interesting conversations, connect with individuals who share similar interests, have a voice, contribute meaningfully, and receive acknowledgment and rewards.
Concerns: The fear of not achieving recognition in society and being perceived as uninteresting.
Exploring Platform Enhancement Ideas
How can we design a captivating platform for users even without the latest content availability?
What strategies can we employ to encourage users to generate the most compelling content?
Is there a way to cultivate a community of highly creative users who actively contribute content?
Leveraging User Profiles in the Competitive Landscape
The information gathered from User Profiles played a key role in defining our position within the Competitors Matrix. Furthermore, it was instrumental in creating a hypothesis to address the questions mentioned earlier. This approach was vital in identifying key features that not only improve social interactions on the platform but also substantially increase content uploads and user engagement. The features include:
Discussions
Recommendations
Reviews
Consider the possibility of establishing a conventional blog or a Facebook group dedicated to film enthusiasts as a precursor to platform development. This preliminary step could help in audience building and community formation.
Homepage Enhancement Strategies
To revamp the Home Page effectively, I've explored two promising directions: promoting file uploads and fostering community integration. These concepts warrant thorough testing to gauge their impact.
For the first concept, I've opted to adopt a strategy similar to that of our competitors. The Home Page will feature multiple sliders, each aligned with various hypotheses. To pinpoint the most engaging content, we plan to seek user feedback, helping us determine which type of content deserves prominence:
Individual Recommendations – e.g., "Because you like horrors" slider.
Community Engagement – e.g., "Your friends watched" slider.
Latest Additions – e.g., "New films in our platform" slider.
Top Picks – e.g., "Top 30 films on our platform" slider.
Customer Journey Mapping (CJM)
To ensure a seamless and user-friendly experience for individuals uploading and managing films on our platform, I meticulously designed a Customer Journey Map. This visual representation allows us to delve deep into the user's perspective, identifying critical touch points, emotions, and pain points throughout their interaction with our platform. By analyzing each step of their journey, we can make informed decisions to enhance their overall experience and address any potential challenges they may encounter. This CJM serves as a valuable tool in our ongoing efforts to optimize the user experience and create a platform that exceeds our users' expectations.
Prototyping
Stakeholders concurred that leveraging our existing design system for prototype development would be beneficial in saving time. Furthermore, it enables quicker initiation of testing for the initial product versions.
